Assignment Aims:
The aims for this course are broad and unit specific and are all contained within the course outline via this link;

Also a tutor support website is available for all information regarding this course;

Assignment Brief:
The course itself spans over 2 years and the whole ‘ethos’ of the course is to investigate the approaches, or be able to develop a ‘Business Start Up’ in an industry subject area relevant to each student.
This will involve study alongside practical photography. The areas covered are highlighted on the chart in red. These will be studied for the first year and then specialise in one or more areas over the second year.

Students who come onto this course will be required to take complete ownership and responsibility for the whole of their work produced and ventures undertaken. A proactive and professional approach will be expected at all times. Students on the course must have commitment and drive alongside an ability to approach and liaise with a range of external agencies, clients and industry professionals.

The framework will not be supported by any assignments for the students to follow other than this generic assignment paper, this is to encourage the development of strong and independent learning to take place. All students will have their units and criteria with them at all times, this will be supported by all course information being available via the tutor support website. This course has to have all students who are able to work very independently and take total ownership of all the criteria and learning outcomes.

The 5 different ‘Mandatory Blocks A’ will be under pinned by a double unit in business planning for the industry. This unit will require support from outside agencies / clients and will also need guest speakers or mentors as expert professional advice is essential. This also needs to be up to date and very accurate. These could come from ‘Business Link’ and local advisers on what is available for business start up programs alongside any government initiatives.

The students will be required to produce the following over the 2 year program. A complete marketing and advertising strategy with a supporting website that is both creative and able to convey a clear and concise message with all supporting design and imagery.

‘Niches’ in the market place will need to be found and exploited through strong market research, this will involve researching all contemporary practitioners. This will then inform how you can enter the market place with a strong ‘Brand Identity’, supported by suitable and persistent marketing and advertising.

‘Creative Collectives’ will be encouraged across the course where students can collaborate to the advantage of the group. Not just sole traders but the theory and application of partnerships will be looked at all the way up to company directors roles and responsibilities.

Realism and ‘time out’ of guided learning hours at college (GLH) is the whole point of this course, and in this way the students are prepared for the rigours of the industry in an honest and informed manner. The course will require the students to be very proactive. The students will be encouraged to work independently, and in their own time and expense, source and  engage with the clients and creative industry professionals in order to achieve high levels of professionalism.

Support will be given on how to approach; Advertising Agencies, Fashion Designers, Editorial / PR Agencies, Wedding and Portrait Studios, and Industrial Commercial clients. Then it is additional to the course that they spend time in forming client links as this is a key part to their overall ‘Business Plans’ that they will have to produce as the course develops.

Research:
Research within this course will take a slightly different approach in that for most of the time you will be looking at contemporary practices (and historical practitioners). This will ensure that all ‘up to the minute’ marketing and advertising methods and techniques can be studied. It is key to have an awareness of what is happening in the industry ‘now’ and with a view to future 'niches' being exploited in the future.

You are expected to take ownership of your units and all work is encouraged to be student led with tutor support. This means that you will have the freedom to research and discover photography that is particular to you and your theme with full support from your tutor at all times.

This research is all recorded in an online Blog; you need to visit www.blogger.com. This way of working will be fully explained and guidance will be provided throughout the course. Working online will allow you to supplement your work both at ,and away from college, and also allow me to support students more easily.

A tracking system is employed which will help you to see which criteria you have met and when. Also I can comment on your work as it is produced offering support and guidance in time for you to adapt , change and improve your work as you go along. All comments and advice is dated and evidenced as to when it was given and what exactly was advised.

All research for each photographer, artist, illustrator and graphic designer has to consist of your thoughts, ideas and critical analysis and must not consist of any ‘cut and paste’ information, as this cannot be marked as your own. What you must do with all research is to analyse what it is of value you can draw out and add of value to your own work. All research must be compared to the work you have produced.

The blog website is a form of self - evaluation which is ongoing and allows you to evidence everything that you see and do whilst at college . Evaluations should take place all the time in the form of ‘Reflective Practice’, which allows you to improve and to raise your level of achievement. Evidence is the key word in that this must be present as proof of meeting the learning outcomes / criteria.

For your research you have your own Blogger website, this should be used to its full potential with photographs, videos, audio and supporting text. A media rich website such as the Blogger can allow you to evidence what you discover through research in a variety of ways to suit the learner.

Materials:
All students are encouraged to work online via the Blogger and so wont need to print out any documentation.(However some may choose to work via a sketchbook). All students will need a memory stick to allow all data / work to be transferable.

Some units require the production of a portfolio and some do not so check your unit requirements very carefully. A recommended reading list will be provided to supplement learning which are available from the library or online.

Required for Assessment:
All students are required to research the work of relevant contemporary creative professionals, the emphasis being on the contemporary to enable you to compete in the modern market place.

2. A complete website with all written work, images, research, videos and links to themes with all associated reflective practice.
